Derrick was introduced to the hunting and shooting sports by his father at the age of 6 when he started hunting dove and quail in the desert areas of Arizona. He moved to Utah while in junior high school and became fascinated with waterfowl hunting.

Derrick's family was raised in southern Idaho and regular pheasant and waterfowl hunting trips along the Snake River were normal, including one trip when Derrick discovered his passion for decoying geese in dry grain fields.

Besides hunting local areas, Derrick hunts in Canada, Idaho and Wyoming. In his travels he has learned not to trust his hunting gear to inferior products and truly believes Zink products, along with the many Avery and GHG products that have been designed and refined by Fred Zink are the best in the business. Spending hard earned time and money to chase waterfowl in several states and Canadian providences has taught him many things about having the right gear, attitude and motivation to consistently harvest waterfowl.

In 2003 Derrick decided to start filming the hunts he participated in. He started a business called Whackage Waterfowl in hopes of producing a waterfowl hunting videos. In 2006 he completed his first video titled "Beyond the Borders". In 2007 Derrick released his second video titled "Destination Unknown, Priority X". These videos were also completely edited by Derrick. These videos have taught him tremendously about what it takes to film waterfowl. During this time Derrick also was able to capture his first hunt with his father in over 15 years.

In addition to hunting waterfowl, Derrick enjoys the summer outdoors in the Rocky Mountains with his wife Trena and their two dogs Porshia and Maddie. His other passions include elk hunting and outdoor cooking. Derrick is also a member of the Avery pro staff.
